MnROAD Objectives
Through the collaborating efforts of the Minnesota Department of Transportation
and the University of Minnesota, the Mn/ROAD facility was constructed to investigate
fourteen major pavement research objectives.
Research Objective 1:
Verification of Empirical Design Models for various types of
pavements. (1-A Aggregate Surfaced Pavements, 2-A Flexibile Pavements,
1-C Rigid Pavements, 1-D Chip Seal Surfaced pavements)
Research Objective 2:
Development of Mechanistically Based Design Methods for
various surfaced roads. (2-A Aggregate Surfaced, 2-B Flexibile, 2-C Rigid)
Research Objective 3:
Development of improved Mechanistic Models for various surfaced roads.
(3-A Aggregate, 3-B Flexibile, 3-C Rigid)
Research Objective 4:
Verification/Improved Frost Action prediction methodology.
Research Objective 5:
Influence of axle load magnitude upon pavement performance under
critical Spring thaw conditions.
Research Objective 6:
Development of vehicle load damage factors for various pavements.
(6-A Aggregate, 6-B Flexibile, 6-C Rigid)
Research Objective 7:
Influence of new vehicle gear configurations and tire systems upon
pavement performance.
Research Objective 8:
Influence of AC mixture properties upon performance/distress.
Research Objective 9:
Influence of unbound granular base/subbase properties upon
flexible pavement performance/distress.
Research Objective 10:
Influence of unbound granular base/subbase properties upon
rigid pavement performance/distress.
Research Objective 11:
Influence of subgrade type upon pavement performance.
Research Objective 12:
Improved roadway instrumentation techniques.
Research Objective 13:
Influence of special design variables upon rigid pavement
performance. (13-A Edge Drains, 13-B Contraction Joints, 13-C Paving WIdth,
13-D Joint Spacing, 13-E Trapezoidal Cross Sections, 13-F Cement Type and Content,
13-G Aggregate Class)
Research Objective 14:
Influence of pavement variability upon reliability based
performance models.
